التفاحة الكبيرة هو أحد ألقاب الأمريكيين لمدينتهم المفضلة، نيويورك، واشتهرت المدينة أيضا باسماء أخرى مثل المدينة التي لا تنام ومدينة جوثام وغيرها، وعادة ما يشير الناس إليها بمدينة نيويورك للتميز عن ولاية نيويورك، وتعتبر نيويورك أكبر مدينة في الولاية وأكبر مدينة في الولايات المتحدة من حيث الكثافة السكانية، حيث يعيش فيها أكثر من 8 ملايين شخص، وتبلغ مساحة المدينة 1214 كيلومتر مربع .

تقع مدينة نيويورك عند مصب نهر هدسون في المنتصف بين العاصمة واشنطن وولاية بوسطن، وتم بناء معظم مدينتها على ثلاث جزر وهي لونج آيلاند وستيتن آيلاند ومانهاتن، وقد ساعدها موقعها عند مصب النهر على أن تصبح مركزا تجاريا هاما وميناء للشحن، وفي الوقت الحالي تمتلك مدينة نيويورك أكبر احتياطي فيدرالي من الذهب في العالم .

تمثال الحرية
تم تصميم تمثال الحرية من قبل المهندس الفرنسي جوستاف إيفل، الذي صمم أيضا برج إيفل الشهير. قدمت فرنسا تمثال الحرية هدية للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية في عام 1886 للاحتفال بمرور مئة عام على تأسيس الولايات المتحدة. تم شحنه من فرنسا في 350 قطعة ونقله إلى جزيرة الحرية حيث يقع حاليا وتم تجميعه في غضون 4 أشهر .
مكتبة نيويورك
تعد مكتبة نيويورك ثاني أكبر مكتبة في الولايات المتحدة بعد مكتبة الكونجرس، وهي أيضا ثالث أكبر مكتبة في العالم. تضم المكتبة أكثر من 50 مليون كتاب، وتم تأسيسها عام 1848م، بعد أن وصى جوزيف كوجوسويل بتخصيص 400 ألف دولار أمريكي من ثروته بعد وفاته لبناء المكتبة. تسمح المكتبة بالاطلاع على كتبها بشكل مجاني، ولكنها لا تسمح بالاستعارة الخارجية .

And it is situated in approximately halfway between Washington, D.C. and Boston.The location at the mouth of the Hudson River, which feeds into a naturally sheltered harbor and then into the Atlantic Ocean, has helped the city grow in significance as a trading port. Now New York City’s Federal Reserve Bank has the largest gold storage in the world.

the native people who lived in NY were the Lenape, and they worked in hunting and fishing in the area between the Delaware and Hudson rivers. Then the Europeans reached this area in 16th century when an Italian, Giovanni da Verrazano discovered New York Harbor in 1524 .In 1609 the englishman Henry Hudson, sailed up the Hudson River, then the Dutch founded the first permanent trading post in NY in 162. That year, the Dutch West India Company sent some 30 families to live and work in a tiny settlement on “Nutten Island” that they called New Amsterdam.

The library was established in 1857 , At the behest of Joseph Cogswell, John Jacob Astor placed a codicil in his will to bequeath $400,000 (equivalent of $11.6 million in 2018) for the creation of a public library. And the library is completely free , but its books were not permitted to circulate .
